Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist located in Benton, Illinois. The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible for ensuring workplace safety, conducting safety training, and implementing health and safety protocols.

Purpose: The EHS Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations while promoting a culture of continuous improvement and employee well-being. This role plays a key part in managing environmental waste programs, conducting audits, supporting ISO 9001 Quality Management System initiatives, and developing innovative training content using AI tools.

Primary Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to):

Environmental Compliance & Safety

  • Develop and implement comprehensive environmental health and safety (EHS) programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure full compliance with company, local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and processes to identify hazards and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor environmental factors such as air and water quality, hazardous waste, and emissions.
  • Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all hazardous substances.
  • Ensure employees are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with SDS requirements.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses; determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage injury case documentation and follow-up (injury case management).
  • Coordinate with third-party waste disposal companies to manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste shipments.
  • Take samples of contaminated soil or water for analysis and documentation.
  • Oversee emergency response team activities during spill cleanups and other incidents.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining emergency response plans, including evacuation and spill response protocols.
  • Monitor and ensure proper labeling of fire extinguishers and all waste receptacles throughout the facility.
  • Conduct onboarding safety training for all new hires.
  • Train employees on EHS topics, including emergency procedures, PPE usage, and safe work practices.
  • Provide forklift operator certification training to employees.
  • Maintain required certifications: RCRA, DOT, HAZWOPER, and Forklift Trainer.

ISO 9001 Quality Management System

  • Serve as the organization’s ISO 9001 Lead Auditor.
  • Plan, conduct, and document internal audits of the Quality Management System.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 standards and support external audit readiness.
  • Collaborate with departments to implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain documentation and records related to quality objectives, audit findings, and management reviews.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

Qualifications:

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an EHS role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
  • Experience with AI tools for training content creation is a plus.
  • Must be willing to obtain ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification within the first year of employment.

Skills and Certifications:

  • Strong knowledge of environmental and safety regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Forklift Certification (training provided upon hire)
  • RCRA Training (training provided upon hire)
  • HAZWOPER Certification – Hazardous Waste Operations (training provided upon hire)
  • First Aid/CPR Certification (training provided upon hire)
  • Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds or more
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of professionalism and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
