Director of Marketing & Communications Job Description 

(May 2025)

The Boone County Historical Society (BCHS) is seeking a dedicated Director of Marketing, Communications & Events to join a small, close-knit team of staffers who power the Boone County History & Culture Center in Columbia. The position is typically an in-office position for 32 hours per week plus 6-12 special events each year, however, a more hybrid position can be negotiated. This position will be responsible for defining the Boone County History & Culture Center marketing communications strategies that help us increase brand awareness, and overseeing our digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. This position is also responsible for developing and writing promotional materials that help bolster the organization’s presence in our community. Those materials include a bi-monthly newsletter, constituent emails, event flyers, social media posts, exhibit materials, two annual direct mail campaigns, and more. The position also manages the organization’s website and the website’s style and content integration with all other company communications. 

The position reports to the Executive Director but will work closely with the Director of Philanthropy. The candidate should be familiar with Adobe graphic design software and be able to manage multiple projects at the same time.

There are four core skills required for the position.

 Excellent writing skills (above average proficiency with grammar, spelling, punctuation, phrasing)

 Knowledge of and above average ability to work in WordPress and create/revise/design website content.

 An ability to create excellent social media content 

 Excellent graphic design skills that go beyond Canva (e.g., Adobe Suite InDesign)

Responsibilities:

Communications 

• Serve as managing editor and designer of the bi-monthly 8-page newsletter

• Act as lead graphic designer, creating a wide range of media from newspaper advertisements and large-scale outdoor banners to digital ads and history exhibition panels

• Develop, monitor and manage social media, including sites dedicated to the Montminy Gallery

• Plan and execute messaging in 2-4 monthly emails designed to engage members and donors

• Write, photograph and post promotional content for events and exhibitions on BooneHistory.org

• With the Executive Director, manage media relations, including press releases, interviews and inquiries

• Act as photographer at BCHS events to ensure images are available for promotional and historical use

Advancement

• Assist the Director of Philanthropy in researching, composing, and developing campaign messaging for three fundraising appeals annually (Summer Give, Holiday Appeal and CoMoGives)

• With the Director of Philanthropy, help develop and fulfill sponsorship opportunities and the associated benefits

Events

• Member of the Hall of Fame Gala Planning Committee (May through October)

• Represent BCHS as our point person for Venue Rentals (offering tours of our venues)

• Concerts (assisting the Membership Services Manager)

• Things That Matter Series (assisting the staff with execution and photography)

• Heritage Festival (third weekend in September each year)

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field

• 5+ years of experience in Communications and Event Management 

• Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills

• Proficiency in graphic design software, especially Adobe InDesign or Illustrator

• Strong understanding of social media trends and practices

• Strong knowledge of WordPress and website design

• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills

The position’s benefits include paid time off, sick leave, family leave, and membership to a Direct Primary Healthcare provider. Salary will be based on experience and skill set and will be competitive for a 4-day workweek.
